Return Cases. —Two "return" cases occurred during the year and
necessary action was taken.

It will be observed that there was a slight increase in the number of
cases notified in 1923. The percentage of removals to the M.A.B.
Hospitals was high, while the case mortality rate was somewhat lower
than that for 1927.
Information was received from the M.A.B. that 18 of the cases sent
to Hospital in the course of the year proved not to be suffering from
diphtheria.
Of the 155 cases notified, 35 occurred in Stanley Ward, 60 in Church
Ward, 35 in Cheyne Ward, 15 in Hans Town Ward, and 10 in Royal
Hospital Ward.
During the year several cases were notified from the Infants' Ward
of two Hospitals in the Borough. Thorough examinations of the drainage
system of the Hospitals were thereupon carried out and such defects as
were found to exist were rectified by the Board of Management. Investigation
for "carrier" cases was also made.
The following table shows the average annual case rate, case mortality
rate, and percentage of cases removed to hospital in each of the quinquennial
periods since 1911.
