It will be observed that the number of births of Chelsea Infants in
Hospitals and elsewhere outside Chelsea accounted for 22.0 per cent.
of the total births. In the preceding year the percentage was 21.2.
Chelsea births in Hospitals outside the Borough were distributed
during the year as follows : —St. George's Hospital, 52 ; Queen Charlotte's
Hospital, 21 ; Clapham Maternity Hospital, 9; General Lying-in
Hospital, Lambeth, 9 ; Charing Cross Hospital, 4 ; Royal Free Hospital,
5 ; St. Thomas' Hospital, 2 ; Westminster Hospital, 3 ; City of London
Maternity Hospital, 6 ; Miscellaneous Hospitals, 8.
Chelsea births in Hospitals and Homes within the Borough during the
year numbered 151. These were distributed as follows:—St. Luke's
Hospital, 122 ; Ormond Maternity Home, 23 ; St. Stephen's Hospital,
1 ; Wilbraham Nursing Home, 3 ; Chelsea Hospital for Women, 1 ; 39,
Royal Avenue, 1.
Illegitimate Births. —The following Table shows the number of
illegitimate births and the illegitimate birth rate per 1,000 births. In
1928, 121 such births were registered in Chelsea, and 16 inward transfers
and 64 outward transfers were made by the Registrar General. The
nett figure for the Borough is therefore 73.

MARRIAGES.
There were 671 marriages registered in the Borough during the year
(690 in 1927). The marriage rate (number of marriages per 1,000 of
population) was 10.5. In the preceding year the marriage rate was 10.8.
DEATHS.
The total deaths registered in the Borough during the year were 1,658.
Transferable deaths of non-residents registered in the Borough numbered
947, and are to be deducted. In addition, there were 150 deaths of Chelsea
residents in Institutions and elsewhere outside the Borough. The nett
Chelsea deaths were therefore 861 and the death rate was 13.5 per 1,000.
The death rate for England and Wales was 11.7, for London 11.6,
and the mean death rate for the 107 Great Towns was 11.6.
