technical point, viz.: "proof of ownership," the owner in this case
living in the country. In any similar cases it will be necessary to

On the 23rd December, whilst inspecting the shops and stalls in
Chrisp Street, my attention was drawn to a barrow full of figs which
were exposed for sale; on examining same found them very rotten
and full of maggots; they were seized, and whilst they were being
put into a vehicle, the vendor (who had given me a false name and
address) disappeared in the crowd. The figs were taken before
Mr. Dickinson, at the Thames Police Court, the following day, who
said he had no hesitation in condemning them and had never seen
such a bad lot before. I am pleased to mention that the seizure has
had a desired effect upon that class of traders in Chrisp Street.
In several cases, at the request of the vendors, I have examined
consignments of fish which were purchased at the wholesale fish
markets, and found the same unfit for the food of man; in each case
the vendors have destroyed the fish in my presence, and I have given
certificates to that effect.
I have made periodical inspections throughout the year of the
cow-houses and slaughter-houses in my district, and in each case
found them in a sanitary condition, with good water supply, &c.
The licensed slaughter-houses number 6.
The „ cow-houses „ 4.
