In presenting the report upon the "Unhealthy Areas," mentioned
on page4-0, the attention of the Committee was called to my report
of the 29th June, 1894, and to my annual report for the year 1894, in
both of which reports details were given as to the number of houses
in the parishes of Poplar and Bromley and likewise respecting the
number of inspections and re-inspections made in a given time.
Whilst writing this report, the Staff Committee has under consideration
the following recommendation of the Committee as amended by the
Board and referred back, viz.:—
"That an additional permanent Sanitary Inspector be appointed
on the same terms as the last appointed Inspectors and that the
sanction of the Local Government Board be asked to the appointment,
also that the areas over which the various Inspectors have
control be considered by the Sanitary Committee and reapportioned
accordingly."*
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
FREDERICK WILLIAM ALEXANDER,
Diplomate Public Health (England),
Medical Officer of Health,
Poplar and Bromley,
Public Health Department,
Offices of the Board,
117, High Street, Poplar, 31st March, 1899.
* The Board at its meeting on the 28th March, 1899, upon the recommendation
of the Staff Committee resolved:—That a lady Sanitary Inspector be appointed,
to aid in the duties performed by the Sanitary Inspectors already in the service of
the Board, particularly in the inspection of factories where female labour is employed,
and in the purchase of samples of foods and drugs for analysis (the actual
duties to be settled by the Sanitary Committee) . . .; and that the consent
of the Local Government Board be asked to the appointment.
There is no doubt that the appointment of such an officer will be an acquisition
