On 19th August the East London Waterworks Company issued
handbills that, "On and after August 22nd the supply of water will
be restricted; the water will be turned on twice a day for about three
hours each time, and at the same hours as nearly as possible daily."
In consequence of this short supply, the district was placarded by the
Board with bills as to the hours the water was on in each particular
street. Stand pipes were fixed during the day at all available points.
For watering the roads and flushing gullies in Poplar, water was
obtained from the East India Docks ; permanganate of potash being
mixed with it.
The schools were inspected to see that the latrines were kept in
sanitary condition.
