THE STRAND DISTRICT, LONDON.
(e) That, as the number of persons sleeping in the Strand
District is but a small portion of the day population,
the time has now arrived when provisions should be
included in the Census Act whereby information shall
be obtained as to the number of persons employed in
the District during the day, discriminating employers
from employed, sex, and nature of employment.
Births.
The total number of births registered in the District was
473. This has to be corrected by the addition of 9 births in
Poland Street Workhouse, 10 in Edmonton Workhouse, and 24,
which I am informed through the courtesy of the Secretary,
occurred in the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street; while 6
births in Bear-yard Workhouse have to be placed to the credit of
St. Martin-in-the-Fields parish, leaving a total of 510 births. The
birth rate is thus 21.2 per 1,000 inhabitants, as against 2114
in 1898. The birth rate in London for 1899 was 29.3 per 1,000;
the average of the previous ten years was 30.7.
