STRAND DISTRICT, LONDON.
Population.
From the changes which are taking place in this District, it
is impossible to determine with accuracy the figures which best
represent the population of the District. The estimate of the
Registrar-General, based upon the rate of decrease in the period
between the last two census years, is, for the year 1899, 23,016 ;
but to this figure there must be added those persons who are
resident in the various Poor-Law establishments, and who add
considerably to the death rate of the District. According to the
return prepared under the Equalisation of Hates Act, the
Registrar-General estimates the population resident in this
District as 23,872 (11,661 in St. Anne's, 12,211 in the Strand
Sub-District), so that there is a difference of 856 between his two
estimates. My own calculation of the population as at the
middle of the year 1899, is 24,000, including inmates of the
Poor-Law establishments connected with the District. This figure
is divided into 11,900 for the Strand portion of the District, and
12,100 for St. Anne's portion, and may possibly be a little too
high for the former, and not quite high enough for the latter.
