ANNUAL REPORT

MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Year 1899.
To the Members of the Hoard of Works for the St. Olave District,
Southwark.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to place before you my
sixth Annual Report. This Report, in accordance with the
regulations of the Local Government Board, deals with the
twelve months ended 31st December, 1899.
The details of the Report show that much work has been
done in improving the sanitary condition of the District.
A large amount of house-to-house inspections have been
effected during the year, and the sanitary defects found have
been remedied, with a few exceptions in which the works
required are not yet completed.
The general death-rate, the zymotic death-rate, the
phthisis death-rate, and the mortality of infants under one
year of age, per 1,000 births, are all higher than for the year
1898. The London general death-rate and the phthisis
death-rate are also higher than the corresponding rates of the
previous year.
During the year 51 cases of overcrowding were abated.
613 notices were served for the cleansing of dirty rooms.
