There are 3 clerks—a chief (W. R. Lawrence), a second
(A. L. Baxter), and a junior (W. J. Lawrence)—two of
whom are able to type and shorthand write ; whilst Inspector
Emblin assists also in the clerical work, being engaged
chiefly indoors.
* 4,999 letters were tvped during the year 1899, as compared with 5,052
during 1898, 5,538 during 1897, and 4,350 during 1896 (8 months).
