There are 3 clerks—a chief (W. R. Lawrence), a second
(A. L. Baxter), and a junior (VV. J. Lawrence)—two of
whom are able to type and shorthand write; whilst Inspector
Emblin assists also in the clerical work, being engaged
chiefly indoors. The telephone placed in the Sanitary
Offices has proved of great benefit in saving letters and
telegrams in many instances.
* 5,052 letters were typed during the year 1898, as compared with 5,538
during 1897, and 4,350 during 1896 (8 months).
