DIPHTHERIA.
During 1897, 138 deaths were registered in Lambeth
from Diphtheria, as compared with 129 during 1896, and an
annual average of 1196 for the last ten years (1887 to
1896).
704 cases were notified during 1897, as compared with
652 in 1896, and an annual average of 534 3 for the seven
years, 1890 to 1896.
Of the 704 cases notified, 313 were removed to hospital,
and 391 were treated at their homes. The case mortality
per cent. for the year is, therefore, 19.6, varying from 28.8
to l2.3, according as the cases were treated at hospital or
at home respectively, a difference, in all probability, to be
explained by the greater severity of the cases sent to
hospital.
The age and sex incidence and mortality from Diphtheria
cases notified in Lambeth during 1897 are as follows:—
