INFANTILE MORTALITY, 1897.
Of the 5,251 deaths, 1,425 were infants under one year of
age. giving a proportion of 151.8 (corrected) per 1,000

atrophy and inanition, bronchitis and other diseases of the
respiratory organs, diarrhœa and enteritis, premature birth,
measles and whooping cough, and convulsions. Table J
gives the infantile mortality in different Towns in England
and Wales, and in the London Districts.
In the Registration Sub-Districts of Lambeth the uncorrected
infantile mortality varies from 314.9 per 1,000
births in Lambeth Church First to 118.7 in Kennington
Second (the low rate of 145 3 in Waterloo Road and 188.7
in Lambeth Church Second being explainable by the fact
that these Sub-Districts contain the General Lying-in
Hospital and the Workhouse respectively. thus:—
