Public Health Department,
333, Kennington Road,
London, S.E.
February, 1898.
To the Chairman and Members of the Vestry of the Parish
of Lambeth.
Gentlemen,
The past year 1897 is one of which the Vestry may
well feel proud, from the point of view of the sanitary
advance made by the Parish. The organisation and
enlargement of the Disinfecting Staff; the opening of the
new extra Disinfecting Station (fitted with one of the most
modern and efficient disinfecting machines), and the new
extra Coroner's Court, Inquest Room, and Mortuary ; the
adoption of a complete set of Bye-Laws for Houseslet-in-Lodgings
or occupied by members of more than
one family ; the completion of detailed Registers of''
Workshops, Bakehouses, and Cowhouses ; the establishment
of Baths and Wash-houses in Kennington Road ; are special
matters which only need mentioning to show the good and
important work that has been achieved by the Vestry during
the year, in addition to the routine duties of the Officers of
the Health Department, the nature and extent of which
may be gathered from a perusal of this Report, which I
have the honour of presenting to you.
The Vital Statistics (taken as a whole) of the Parish of
Lambeth are satisfactory, in so far as such statistics can be
a gauge of the sanitary state of a District, though those of
the so-called Inner Wards show room for considerable
improvement and amendment. (See Special Report in
Appendix.)
In conclusion, as Medical Officer, I must acknowledge the
support that I have received at all times from the Members
of the Sanitary Committee and of the Vestry generally and
its Officials, whilst no praise that I can give to the special
Sanitary Staff that works directly under me will compare
with the excellent record of their past year's work, as shewn
'n the pages of this Report.
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
JOSEPH PRIESTLEY, B.A., M.D., D.P.H.,
Medical Officer of Health.
