THE MARRIAGE-RATE.
The number of marriages registered in Lambeth during
the year 1897 was 2445, as compared with 2445 for the
year 1896.
The marriage-rate for Lambeth is, therefore, 16.2 per
1,000 inhabitants, as compared with 18.5 for London.
Tables B and C shew the number of marriages and the
marriage-rates for the last ten years in Lambeth, and it will
again be noticed that the marriage-rate has been gradually,
but persistently, falling during that period, as also during the
previous decennium. Marriage statistics are of little value.
THE DEATH-RATE.
The total number of deaths registered in Lambeth during
the year 1897 was 5486 as compared with 5376 for the
year 1896. Of the total 5486 deaths, 2845 were males and
2641 females, showing an excess of 204 males.
The death-rate for Lambeth is, therefore, 18.3 per 1,000
inhabitants (20.1 for males and 16.7 for females), as compared
with 18.1 for London (19.9 for males, and 16.5 for
females). These rates are, however, uncorrected, and on
analysing the 5486 deaths registered in Lambeth Parish,
it is found that 664 represent deaths occurring within the
Parish amongst persons not belong thereto. These are
to be deducted, but, on the other hand, there are 429 deaths
registered outside the Parish of persons belonging thereto,
and these must be added, giving a corrected number of
deaths for Lambeth during 1897 of 5251, and a corrected
death-rate of 17.5 per 1,000 inhabitants, as compared with
18.4 for London (the total corrected number of London
deaths being 78,971).
