COWHOUSES.
There were in 1896, 32 registered cowhouses in Lambeth
Parish (three not used). Since then, two more have become
empty, and a new one, viz.: 324 (rear of) Camberwell
New Road, has been licensed by the London County
Council. During 1897, 28 applications have been received
for renewals of licenses, and granted ; and these, together
with the new one mentioned above, make a total of 29.
The new cowhouse is in every way up-to-date in respect
of drainage, lighting and ventilation, air space, water
supply, cleanliness, and sanitary condition generally—the
plan of drainage and all details of construction and fittings
having been submitted to, and approved by, the Medical
Officer of Health, before the Vestry gave its sanction (vide
Vestry Minutes, 1896, p. 1346). The floor space is 64
sq. feet, and the air space 837 c. ft. respectively per cow.
