Medical Officer of Health
FOR THE YEAR 1921.
POPULATION.
The Census enumeration of the population of the Borough took place on the
19th June, 1921, and numbered, according to the preliminary returns, 330,028 persons ;
154,498 being males, and 175,530 females.
There were, therefore, 1.14 females to every male.
The recent Census, however, only shows an increase of 2,625, corresponding to an
intercensal* rate of increase of 0 80 per cent., or a'decennial rate of increase of 0.78 per
cent.

The following are the figures relating to Islington that were ascertained at the several Census periods from 1801 to 1921.

* Note.—The intercensal period 1911-1921, being approximately 10 years months. Fuller
information regarding the Wards and Sub-Registration Districts are not yet available.
The estimated population of the Borough to the middle of the year 1921, has been
given by the Registrar-General as 333,000; and the calculations contained in this report
relating to the year 1921, are based upon these figures.
DENSITY OF POPULATION.
The area of the Borough is 3,092 acres, but the actual area on which the people
live is approximately 2,800 acres, consequently there are 119 persons living on each acre,
while if the gross acreage be taken the number will be 108.
The denisty of the population in Islington is very high when compared with that
of the administrative County of London, which is 60 persons per acre.
MARRIAGES.
Marriages, 3,141 ; Marriage Rate, 18'86.—The number of persons
married was 6,282, as contrasted with 6,740 in the preceding year, which is a decrease of
458. The marriage rate was 18 86 per thousand inhabitants, as compared with 20 05 in 1920.
