Milkshops and Dairies.—At the close of the year there were 625 milkshops and
dailies on the register, 25 having been added to it, while 8 were removed.
They received 468 visits from the District Sanitary Inspectors, who served 44 notices,
for the execution of various sanitary improvements and the cleansing of dirty utensils.
ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND DRUGS.
During the year 1,201 samples of foods and drugs were submitted for analysis by the
Food and Drugs Inspector and the District Inspectors, who purchased the samples for
submission to our Analyst, Dr. F.L. Teed, and to the additional Analyst, Mr. A. Pinchin,
B.Sc. Of the total samples, 1,141 were reported to be genuine, and 60 adulterated, or 4 9
per cent. This percentage is 12 higher than in the previous year, and 3 2 per cent, below
the average rate during the preceding 10 years.

The greatest amount of adulteration occurred in the first and fourth quarters of the year, as is seen by the statement given below, when it was 5.4 and7.7 per cent. respectively, and contrasted with 3.3 and 3.7 per cent. respectively in the second and third quarters.

Prosecutions.—37 summonses were issued under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act,
of which 25 were successfully prosecuted. Altogether penalties and costs to the amount
of £63 5s. 6d. were obtained.
The Public Analysts, in the quarterly reports during the year, reported on the genuineness
of the articles examined as follows :
