DISTRICT INSPECTOR'S WORK.
The fourteen district inspectors made a total of 62,347 inspections and calls during
the year, an increase of 582 inspections on the corresponding period of 1920; while 19,462
improvements were effected in 7.599 premises; as against 16,611 improvements in 7 067
premises for the preceding year.
Synopsis of Inspectors' Work.—The following statement gives a brief synopsis
of the district inspector's work in 1921.

Notices Served.—There were 4,373 intimation notices served by the inspectors with
respect to nuisances, of which 876 were delivered personally, and 3,497 by post. In 534
instances it became necessary, as the intimations to owners or occupiers of the properties
had been ignored, to report the nuisances to the Public Health Committee, who ordered
statutory notices to be served.
Verminous Premises Bedding and Clothing.—283 premises which were
found to be in a verminous condition, were cleansed by the owners or occupiers upon
receiving the Inspectors' intimations. In 56 instances it was necessary to remove the
bedding and clothing to the Disinfecting Station for purification or destruction.
Smoke Nuisances.—114 complaints of smoke issuing from factory chimneys in the
borough were investigated, and as a result of the Inspector's observation 3 notices were
served upon the owners of the businesses requiring the abatement of the nuisance.
REMOVAL OF DUST.
Twenty-one applications were received during the year for the removal of dust, which
is 15 below the number recorded last year.

Dust Receptacles Provided.—During the year 1,776 dust receptacles, were
provided, while 34 were repaired after the service of sanitary notices.
