the year, 509 houses, in which all the repair work had been completed, were transferred from the
supervision of the Temporary Sanitary Inspectors to the District Sanitary Inspectors in whose
areas the houses were situated.
At the end of the year work was in progress at a number of houses and 64 of these were
brought up to standard and handed over to the District Inspector in the first few weeks of 1925.
The remedies secured in these cases will be recorded in the report for 1925.
(3) Improvements in Houses Let in Lodgings on the Register on 1st January, 1923.
In February, 1923, each of the ten District Sanitary Inspectors commenced the work of
inspecting each month ten of the "tenement" houses on the Register at the beginning of 1923.
After each inspection, necessary Intimation Notices are served and the details are reported to the
fortnightly meetings of the Public Health Committee who give directions for the issue of any
Statutory Notices required to bring the houses up to standard. This work is in addition to the
normal routine duties carried out by the ten District Sanitary Inspectors.

The following table shows (1) the number of houses let in lodgings on the Council's Register in each of the ten Inspector's areas on 1st January, 1923, (2) the number of these dealt with in 1923 and reported upon last year, (3) the number dealt with in 1924, and (4) a statement of the main requirements called for in the notices issued in 1924:—

From the above table it will be seen that 912 of the 2,169 houses were dealt with in 1923 and
1,003 in 1924. This left 254 houses awaiting attention on 1st January, 1925, and it is hoped to
inspect all of these and issue the necessary notices before the end of April, 1925.
