DEATH-RATE IN ENGLAND AND WALES, AND
IN LONDON, AND IN OTHER LARGE TOWNS.
Before entering upon details with respect to the causes of
death in Kensington, I may mention, by way of comparison
with our local mortality-rates, that the death-rate in England
and Wales, in 1898, was 17.6 per 1,000, and was lower than
the rate in any previous year, excepting 1894, 1896, and 1897.
As compared with the rate in the ten years 1888-97, the deathrate
in 1898 shows a decrease of 0.8 per 1,000.* The rate in
London, as already stated, was 18.7 per 1,000, being 1.0 below
the decennial average.

The subjoined table shows the annual death-rate per 1000 persons living in each of the last eleven years, in Kensington, in London and in England and Wales:—

greater London.—The death-rate in " Greater London,"
which is co-extensive with the Metropolitan and City Police
Districts, the population in the middle of the year, 1898,
numbering 6,408,321 (viz., 4,504,766 in inner or Registration
London, and 1,903,555 in the Outer Ring), was 17.2 per 1,000,
as compared with 18.3, 17.0, and 16.7 in the three preceding
years respectively. The deaths properly belonging to the
Outer Ring, as distinguished from Inner or Registration
