VITAL STATISTICS.
Population.
In accordancc with the prevailing custom, I have adopted the
Registrar-General's estimate of the population for the purposes of this
Report, and this was calculated to have been 87,530 at the middle of the
year 1926.
It will be seen that this estimate of the population, as now calculated
by the Registrar-General, is lower than that for the year 1925.
This is accounted for by the fact that the basis of estimation is modified
by the Registrar-General from time to time, and the difference between
population estimates at different points of time is, therefore, due partly
to the population movements themselves and partly to changes in the
method of estimating them.
The population is estimated upon the figures obtained at the last
