MATERNITY HOME.
In my Report for the year 1926, I mentioned that towards
the end of that year the extensions at the Maternity Home had
been completed, and the year 1927, therefore, is the first
calendar year during which the increased accommodation has
been available. Although the Home has not been fully occupied
during the whole of the period in question, the increased
accommodation and the better facilities generally which are now
available have been much appreciated by both patients and staff
alike. The accommodation now consists of two General Wards
each with nine beds and a Private Ward with two beds, making
a total of 20 beds. In addition, there is an Isolation Ward
and two Labour Wards.
The number of patients admitted during the year was 270,
the Matron and nursing staff being responsible for all the
deliveries, with the exception of ten which were undertaken by
doctors. Happily, one is able to report a year entirely free of
any serious conditions arising in connection with the patients
accommodated. Three infants were not entirely breast-fed while
in the Home owing to physical deficiency on the part of the
mothers. Three babies died within 10 days of birth and there
were 5 cases of still-birth.

The total number of patients accommodated in the Maternity Home up to the end of 1927 was 1,390, the figures each year being as follow:—

1922 (part of)121
1923228
1924220
1925295
1926256
1927270
1,390

Reviewing the work of the Home generally since its
inception in 1922, one has not the slightest hesitation in affirming
that the Home has unquestionably proved of very great benefit
to the mothers of Greenwich. One has only to be familiar with
the housing conditions in many parts of the Borough to realise
the need for an Institution of the nature of the Maternity Home.
The following continue their good work in the Borough:—
Local Medical Practitioners' School Clinic.
Health Centre, Ueptford Green.
Rachel McMillan Memorial Nursery School.
