Sputum Examinations.—Of 150 sputum specimens bacteriologically
examined at the Seamen's Hospital, 32 proved positive.
At the same time, 189 specimens were chemically examined at
the Dispensary for Albumen, with very similar results to those
reported previously—58 being positive.
In closing this Section of the Report it might be mentioned
that the relations with the other authorities concerned in the
work (the Board of Guardians, the Ministry of Pensions, the
British Red Cross Society, the School Authorities, and the
Various Hospitals) have been cordial and the co-operation well
maintained.
Tuberculosis Carf. Committee.—The Public Health Committee
acted as this Committee during the year, and Miss
Johnston, the Honorary Secretary, supplies the following brief
information, which by no means indicates the amount of work
and worry undertaken :—
The following Societies rendered financial and other
assistance to patients and their families during 1927, viz. :—
Charity Organisation Society.
United Services Fund.
Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families
Association.
Soldiers' and Sailors' Help Society.
Society for Relief of Distress.
Also several voluntary helpers who kindly provided letters,
etc., for Hospital or Convalescent Homes. The Borough
Council also found work for one or two patients, and two
private employers. have from time to time found "light jobs"
for several others.
Negotiations are in progress with the object of inaugurating
a Handicraft Class for the Dispensary patients, and there is
good hope that such will shortly be established.
The Greenwich Board of Guardians continue to consider
most sympathetically cases referred to them from the Dispensary,
either for treatment or material assistance.
A sum of £135 1s. 6d. was collected from patients and
their relatives on behalf of the London County Council towards
the cost of treatment.
