PREVALENCE OF, AND CONTROL OVER, INFECTIOUS
DISEASES.

Notifications under the Provisions of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.—During the year 2,098 cases have been notified under the above Act. The following table shows the comparison since 1922:—

Small-Pox.—No case of this disease occurred during the
year.
Contacts.—Seven intimations were received from Medical
Officers of Health of the Port Sanitary Authorities respecting
persons who had been in contact with Small-Pox and Bubonic
Plague whilst on board ship. In every instance they were kept
under observation for the usual period.
Details respecting vaccination in the Borough are given
in the Supplemental Vaccination Reports on page 63.
Diphtheria. — Four hundred and forty - eight cases of
Diphtheria were notified during the year, as compared with 217,
319, 431 and 503 respectively in the years 1923, 1924, 1925
and 1926. The distribution of these cases was as follows :—174
in East Greenwich, 139 in West Greenwich, 41 in St. Nicholas.
82 in Charlton, and 12 in Kidbrooke.
Of this number, 446 were removed to the Hospital
for treatment, but 24 of these cases were reported by the
Hospital Authorities as not suffering from the disease.
There were 11 fatalities due to this disease, which gives a
case mortality of 2-4 per cent.
Two thousand nine hundred and sixteen specimens were
forwarded by medical practitioners for bacteriological examination
from cases suspected to be diphtheria. Of this number,
2,664 were reported to give negative or doubtful result, and 252
were positive in character, being dealt with accordingly.
