Fifty-eight licences have been issued during the year,
of which 31 refer to premises above-mentioned.
Unsound Food.—No seizures of unsound food were made
during the year, but a number of tradesmen voluntarily
surrendered certain articles of food as unwholesome or unfit
for the food of man, particulars of which are set out on page 37.
Ice Cream Prem-ses.— There were 154 premises known
at the commencement of the year where the manufacture or sale
of this commodity was carried on; 10 have been added during the
year and 6 taken off, leaving a total of 158 premises. These
premises were inspected on 151 occasions, improvement required
by way of cleansing of the premises in 4 cases, insanitary conditions
remedied in 5 instances, arid 3 cases where the ice
cream was improperly stored.
Bakehouses.—Eighty-one inspections have been made of
the various Bakehouses in the Borough, and 35 nuisances found
therein have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 37 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts. — Four hundred and forty-one
samples have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale
of Food and Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for
analysis, of which 425 were certified to be genuine and 16
adulterated, the adulterations thus being equivalent to 3.6 per
cent, of the samples taken, as compared with 2.03 per cent,
last year.
In accordance with a request contained in the Ministry of
Health's Memo. 36 / Foods (January, 1927), the quarterly reports
of the Public Analyst are now submitted in slightly different
form than hitherto, a special classification termed "adulterated
samples, etc.," being adopted. This includes samples below
standard or otherwise not complying with the prescribed
requirements.
As the Public Health (Preservatives, &c., in Food) Regulations
(with certain exceptions) came into force on the 1st
January, 1927, it was anticipated that a somewhat higher percentage
of adulterated samples would be shown ; the total
number of actual cases found was 16 as against 9 for the
previous year.
