SECTION 3.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
The tables on pages 29 to 31 and 34 to 41 summarise, as
far as possible, the Sanitary work of the Department ; from
this it will be seen that a total of 19,330 houses and premises
have been inspected or re-inspected during the year ; 1,120
intimation notices and 148 statutory notices have been served.
It is very gratifying to be able to report that only in
five instances was it found necessary to institute Police Court
proceedings during the year, particulars of which are contained
in the table on page 38-
There were altogether, throughout the year 474 complaints
registered.
Factories, Workshops and Workplaces.—One hundred
and eighty-eight inspections have been paid to these premises
within the Borough during the year. According to information
kindly furnished me by the Inspector of Factories for the Woolwich
District there are 214 factories, 118 workshops and 37
wharves and quays.
Outworkers' Register.—Eight lists, containing 24 names
and addresses have been received from employers within the
district. In addition to this 50 lists containing 127 names and
addresses of Outworkers residing in this Borough were received
from Medical Officers of Health of other Boroughs, whilst 5
lists with 7 names and addresses were forwarded to other
districts, thus giving a total of 144 Outworkers in the Borough.
177 visits of inspection have been paid to these premises.
