This figure gives a Birth Rate of 16.27 per 1,000 of the
population, which is 3.79 below the average for the last ten
years and the lowest ever recorded.
The Birth Rate for the County of London equals 16.1 per
1,000 of the population. The Birth Rate for all England and
Wales was 16.7 and 17.1 for the 107 large towns.
Illegitimate births numbered 63, representing 3.7 per cent.
of the total births.
Sixty-five illegitimate births actually were registered in the
Borough. In 21 cases, however, the mothers were ordinarilyresident
outside the Borough, and these births were consequently
allocated to the correct area. 19 illegitimate births belonging
to Greenwich occurred outside the Borough, thus giving the net
figure of 63.
Twenty-nine illegitimate births occurred in the Greenwich
and Deptford Hospital.
Under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926, which
came into operation on the 1st July, 1927, the registration of
stillbirths was made compulsory. It is therefore not possible
to record any accurate figure for the year under review, but
under the Notification of Births Act, 1907, 82 intimations were
received of stillbirths occurring in the Borough.
Under the provisions of the Notification of Births Act, 1907,
intimations have been received from medical men, parents and
others, with respect to 1,995 births.
DEATHS.
The nett number of deaths registered during 1927 was 1,115,
of which 579 were males and 536 females. The crude Death Rate
for the Borough, 10.83 per 1,000, is the lowest recorded since
the inception of the Borough and compares favourably with 11.9
and 12.2, the respective Death Rates for the County of London
and the 107 large towns.
The Quarterly Tables of Causes of Deaths shown in the
Appendix of this Report differ slightly from those hitherto
recorded in past years, and follow the classification of the
Registrar General's Short List taken from the Manual of the
International List of the Causes of Death, a copy of which
