No seizures of unsound food were made during the year,
but a number of tradesmen voluntarily surrendered certain
articles of food as unwholesome or unfit for the food for man,
particulars of which are set out on page
Ice Cream Premises.—There were 126 premises known
at the commencement of the year where the manufacture of this
commodity was carried on ; 52 have been added during the
year and 24 taken off, leaving a total of 154 premises. These
premises were inspected on 156 occasions, improvement required
by way of cleansing of the premises in 6 cases, insanitary
conditions remedied in 4 instances, and 2 cases where the ice
cream was improperly stored.
Bakehouses.—Eighty-five inspections have been made of
the various Bakehouses in the Borough and 11 nuisances found
therein have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 37 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred and forty - two
samples have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale
of Food and Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for
analysis, of which 433 were certified to be genuine and 9 adulterated,
the adulterations thus being equivalent to 2.03 per cent,
of the samples taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 72 were milk,
of which 3 were certified to be adulterated ; the remaining
adulterated samples were 3 of vinegar, and 3 of camphorated
oil.
It was not considered necessary to take legal proceedings
in respect of either of the 9 adulterated cases.
An application was made by a Resident for a private
analysis by the Public Analyst of a Wedding Cake. Such
examination showed that the ingredients contained therein were
in bad condition. The Public Analyst further gave his opinion
that the cake was unfit for human consumption.
