SECTION 5.
Inspection and Supervision of Food.
Milk Supply.—The majority of milk supplied to this
Eorough is obtained from farmers and large firms outside the
district.
During the year two medical men practising in the Borough
directed my attention to cases of illness which they were treating.
The patients were employees at a large dairy farm, such employees
alleging that their illness was caused through disease
of the animals on the farm. I visited the farm, which is one
of a very high-class character, and found the premises in a very
satisfactory condition and a certain number of the cows were
being isolated because of a curious condition affecting the udder.
I arranged with the Company that none of the milk should be
put into general circulation. This embargo was continued for
several weeks, and during the whole of this period the milk
supplied by these animals was not used for general consumption.
Cowhouses.—The four cowhouses in the Borough have
been visited on four occasions, and the required cleansing duly
enforced.
Milk and Dairies (Amendment) Act, 1922.—Milk and
Dairies Order, 1926.—At the commencement of the year there
were 119 premises on the Register of Dairies and Milkshops. With
the coming into force of the New Order on 1st October advantage
was taken to revise the Registers. Twenty-one new applications
have been received during the year and added to the Register,
and twenty-eight names have been taken off, thus leaving a total
of 112 premises now registered. During the year 116 visits of
inspection have been paid to these premises ; notices were served
upon the occupiers in eight cases where dairies required limewashing
or were otherwise in an insanitary condition.
Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1923.—This Order
was made by the Minister of Health under the powers conferred
on him by Section 3 of the Milk and Dairies (Amendment) Act,
1922. Under the Order, the Council, as the local authority,
may grant licenses to distributors, such licenses to be valid only
for a period ending on the 31st December in the vear in respect
of which it is granted.
