PROPOSED BATHS AND WASH-HOUSES.
The question of the erection of new and up-to-date Baths
and Wash-houses has been engaging the serious attention of the
Council for some years past.
The existing Baths in London Street, Greenwich, were
erected as far back as 1850 at a cost of £13.000, and is now
one of the oldest Baths in the kingdom. The present establishment
has become out-of-date and the cost of maintenance, owing
to the necessity for continual repair is steadily increasing.
The present accommodation consists of : —
2 Swi/mning Baths.
1st Class 91-ft. x 19-ft.
2nd Class 95-ft. x 19-ft.
42 Slipper Baths.
1st Class Male 12. Female 4.
2nd Class Male 20. Female 6.
This accommodation was probably sufficient for the needs
of the public at the time of the erection of such Baths, for the
population of the parish of Greenwich in 1851 was only 16,194,
and the accommodation provided was equivalent to 1 Slipper
Bath per 385 persons.
The population of the Borough (comprising the parishes
of Greenwich, St. Nicholas, Deptford, and Charlton and Kidbrooke)
is now 104,050. equivalent to 1 Bath for 2,477 persons.
