flies; so much so that persons to whom disinfected articles were
returned complained of the number of dead bodies of flies
included in the parcels.
Public Sanitary Conveniences.— During the year an
additional underground convenience was constructed at Batley
Park, Blackheath. The work was carried out by the Works
Department by direct labour at a cost of £3,330, and was duly
opened on 6th December, 1926.
The following are the underground sanitary conveniences
in the Borough:—
Blackwall Lane, East Greenwich;
South Street, Greenwich;
Creek Road, St. Nicholas, Deptford;
Blackheath Hill (foot of);
Batley Park, Blackheath.
Houses Let in Lodgings.—The new Bye-laws made by
the London County Council under Section 6 of the Housing
Act, 1925, came inito operation on the 5th March, 1926. One
hundred and twelve houses have been registered and 137 inspections
made upon such premises.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.—Complaints as
to rat infestation and cases coming to the notice of the Department
are forthwith investigated. Advice and assistance are
given where necessary. Three hundred and fifteen such investigations
were made by the Council's Officers, but in no case was
it necessary to serve a Notice.
Verminous Premises.—The means adopted in 1925 to
assist occupiers to cope with verminous conditions continues to
give great satisfaction. Applicants are required to see the
Inspector before 10.30 a.m., bringing with them a plain bottle;
when the Inspector is satisfied as to the bona fide of the
applicant, a quantity of fluid (vermicine) is given together with
the loan of a sprayer. A pamphlet of instruction is also issued
with the fluid. This method of self-help and instruction has undoubtedly
led to greater effort on the part of the occupiers
to cleanse their premises instead of relying mainly on the owner.
Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions
Acts, 1920 and 1923.—Six applications were received during
the year from tenants for certificates under these Acts. In each
case the Certificate was granted.
