SECTION 3.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
The tables on pages 28 to 30 and 33 to 40 summarise, as
far as possible, the Sanitary work of the Department; from
this it will be seen that a total of 22,899 houses and premises
have been inspected or re-inspected during the year; 1,249
intimation notices and 69 statutory notices have been served.
It is very gratifying to be able to report that only in
eight instances was it found necessary to institute Police Court
proceedings during the year, particulars of which are contained
in the table on page 37.
There were altogether throughout the year 509 complaints
registered.
Factories, Workshops and Workplaces.—Two hundred
and fifty-one inspections have been paid to these premises
within the Borough during the year. According to information
kindly furnished me by the Inspector of Factories for the Woolwich
District there are 220 factories, 129 workshops and 30
wharves and quays.
Outworkers' Register.—Eight lists, containing 26 names
and addresses have been received from employers within the
district. In addition to this 52 lists containing 137 names and
addresses of Outworkers residing in this Borough were received
from Medical Officers of Health of other Boroughs, whilst 7
lists with 12 names and addresses were forwarded to other
districts, thus giving a total of 151 Outworkers in the Borough.
173 visits of inspection have been paid to these premises.
