The persons coming within the purview of the Maternity and
Child Welfare Committee are Expectant and Nursing Mothers, and
children under five years of age.
Infant Welfare Consultations.—Consultations are held
at two Centres on each afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. as follows :—
Borough Hall, Royal Hill Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
Conduit House, 236, Trafalgar
Road Monday, Wednesday and Friday
105, Shooters Hill Road Tuesday and Friday.
Albany Institute, Creek Road Thursday.
Charlton Vale Wesleyan School
Room, Woolwich Road Wednesday.
Each Centre is attended by a Medical Officer, a Health Visitor in
charge, and a Health Visitor assisting, also a Lady Clerk working
either voluntarily, or on the Council's salaried staff, a milk saleswoman,
and at some of the Centres ladies kindly attend voluntarily
to endeavour to educate the mothers in making infants' clothing,
etc. All Centres are not yet provided with this latter facility.
Further voluntary assistance on these lines will be appreciated.
Any rate payer in the Borough is entitled to attend the Infant
Consultation Centres, obtain the advice and assistance of the Health
Visitor, and Medical Officer if required, also obtain Dried Milk or
simple medicaments on payment for the same, and take advantage
of the clothing facilities.
Those mothers in regular attendance at the Clinic who desire
Milk, etc., at reduced price, are required to fill inaform setting out in
full their financial condition. These applications are then considered
by a small Sub-Committee, together with this Council's Finance
Officer and the Health Visitors concerned, fortnightly. Necessitous
Expectant and Nursing Mothers are also supplied, in special cases,
with free dinners three times weekly by arrangement with certain
local dining room proprietors. All cases so dealt with are duly
reported to the Assistance Sub-Committee of the Maternity and
Child Welfare Committee.
Artificial Sunlight Treatment Centre.—This Council has
recently fitted up and opened a Light Treatment Centre at Conduit
House, 236, Trafalgar Road, which is in use every day from 10 to
12.30, and 1.30 to 5 p.m. for cases referred to the Centre by the
Medical Officers attending the Infant Welfare Consultations. The
treatment is given by a fully trained and specially certificated
nurse.
