In addition to the periodical visits and inspections of food
shops, etc., supervision is also exercised on Saturday evenings and
Bank Holidays.
No seizures of unsound food were made during the year, but a
number of tradesmen voluntarily surrendered certain articles of
food as unwholesome or unfit for the food of man in addition to the
meat already referred to, particulars of which are set out on page 39.
Ice Cream Premises.—There were 138 premises known at the
commencement of the year where the manufacture of this commodity
was carried on; 29 have been added during the year and 41
taken off, leaving a total of 126 premises. These premises were
inspected on 129 occasions, improvement required by way of
cleansing of the premises in 4 cases, and insanitary conditions
remedied in 6 instances. In 1 case the sale of ice cream was forbidden
and removed from the lists owing to the generally dirty
condition of the premises. Monkeys were also kept where the ice
cream was prepared.
Bakehouses.—Eighty-four inspections have been made of the
various Bakehouses in the Borough and 11 nuisances found therein
have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 38 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred and forty-one samples
have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale of Food and
Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for analysis, of
which 429 were certified to be genuine and 12 adulterated, the
adulterations thus being equivalent to 2.72 per cent. of the samples
taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 105 were milk, of
which 5 were certified to be adulterated; the remaining adulterated
samples were 4 of vinegar, 1 of Pepper, 1 of Cream, and 1 of Jonathan
Apples.
Proceedings were taken in 1 case resulting in fines and costs
amounting to 67s.
