SECTION 3.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
The tables on pages 30 to 32 and 36 to 40 summarise, as far
as possible, the Sanitary work of the Department; from this it will
be seen that a total of 18,458 houses and premises have been
inspected or re-inspected during the year; 1,234 intimation notices
and 116 statutory notices have been served.
It is very gratifying to be able to report that only in eight
instances was it found necessary to institute Police Court proceedings
during the year, particulars of which are contained in the table
on page 40.
There were altogether throughout the year 647 complaints
registered.
Factories, Workshops and Workplaces.—Two hundred
and sixty-six inspections have been paid to these premises within
the Borough during the year. According to information kindly
furnished me by the Inspector of Factories for the Woolwich District
there are 220 factories, 130 workshops and 30 wharves and quays.
Outworkers' Register.—Ten lists, containing 45 names
and addresses have been received from employers within the
district. In addition to this 60 lists containing 138 names and
addresses of Outworkers residing in this Borough were received
from Medical Officers of Health of other Boroughs, whilst 3 lists
with 3 names and addresses were forwarded to other districts,
thus giving a total of 180 Outworkers in the Borough. 69 visits of
inspection have been paid to these premises.
