May, 1925.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit herewith my Annual Report
as Medical Officer of Health for the year 1924 on the health of the
Borough.
It will be seen from a perusal of the statistical tables that the
figures generally are well up to the average, although possibly not
comparing with last year which was a record year throughout the
country.
The Death Rate is 11.47 per 1,000 of the estimated population,
which though slightly higher than last year's record figure of 10.95,
is .76 lower than the average for the previous 5 years and compares
favourably with the rates for the County of London and England
and Wales which are 12.1 and 12.2 respectively.
The Birth Rate is 20.19 per 1,000. Last year the Birth Rate
was 20.54 and the average for the last 10 years, 21.64. The Birth
Rate for the County of London is 18.7 and 18.8 for all England and
Wales. It would seem therefore that whilst the Birth Rate in
most parts of the country is declining in this Borough it remains
fairly constant.
The Infant Mortality Rate for the Borough, measured by the
number of deaths under one year to 1,000 births registered is 73,
compared with 61 last year. The rate for England and Wales is
75, and for the County of London 69.
The Zymotic Death Rate of .69 per 1,000 is somewhat higher
than last year's figure of .46.
The figures relating to the different constituent parts of the
Borough are as follows :—
