In addition to the periodical visits and inspections of food
shops, etc., supervision is also exercised on Saturday evenings and

number of tradesmen voluntarily surrendered certain articles of
food as unwholesome or unfit for the food of man in addition to the
meat already referred to, particulars of which are set out on page
Ice Cream Premises.—There were 133 premises known at the
commencement of the year where the manufacture of this commodity
was carried on; 17 have been added during the year and 12
taken off, leaving a total of 138 premises. These premises were
inspected on 142 occasions, improvement required by way of
cleansing of the premises in 12 cases, and insanitary conditions
remedied in 3 instances. In 1 case the sale of ice cream was
discontinued owing to the unsuitability of the storage arrangements.
Bakehouses.—One hundred and nine inspections have
been made of the various Bakehouses in the Borough and 10
nuisances found therein have been abated.
At the end of the year there were 5 Factory and 36 other
Bakehouses on the Register, 13 of which are underground.
Food and Drugs Acts.—Four hundred and forty samples
have been purchased under the provisions of the Sale of Food and
Drugs Acts and submitted to the Public Analyst for analysis, of
which 428 were certified to be genuine and 12 adulterated, the
adulterations thus being equivalent to 2.72 per cent. of the samples
taken.
Of the total number of samples purchased, 107 were milk, of
which 5 were certified to be adulterated; the remaining adulterated
samples were 4 of mustard and 3 of vinegar.
Proceedings were taken in 4 cases resulting in fines and costs
being imposed in 3 instances. The remaining case was dismissed
owing to Warranty being proved.
