Developmental Diseases.—There were 222 deaths, equal to
a rate of 2.12 per 1,000.
These may roughly be divided into those from causes which
would appear to be unavoidable, viz. :—Congenital defects, 10, and
those from causes more or less preventable, viz. :—Premature birth,
24 ; Injury at birth, 1 ; Debility at birth, 8 ; Atrophy, Debility
and Marasmus, 18 ; Atelectasis, 7 ; Dentition, 3, and Rickets. 1.
The remaining and largest portion of these deaths from developmental
diseases, 150 in number, were from Old Age ; in 1923 there
were 119 deaths from this cause and 137 in the previous year.
Local Diseases.
Nervous System.—Ninety-six deaths were attributed to the
various nervous diseases, which gives a rate of .91 per 1,000 ; last
year the rate was 113 per 1,000. Convulsions were responsible
for 3, all of whom were under five years of age ; 4 were from Meningitis,
59 from Apoplexy, 4 from Hemiplegia or Brain Paralysis,
2 from General Paralysis of the Insane, 1 from other forms of
Insanity, 2 from Epilepsy, 6 from diseases of the Spinal Cord, 2
from Softening of the Brain, 4 from Locomotor Ataxy, 2 from
Encephalitis, 2 from Encephalitis Lethargica, and 5 from other
diseases of this system.
Organs of Special Sense.—There were 4 deaths from this
class of causes, equal to a rate of .03 per 1,000.
Circulatory System.—The Death Rate from diseases of this
system was 1.39 per 1,000, there being a total of 146 such deaths.
Valvular Diseases of the Heart were responsible for 94, 3 from
Aneurism, 4 from Embolism, 4 from Angina Pectoris, 2 from
Pericarditis, 1 from Phlebitis, and from the remaining diseases of
this system, 38.
Respiratory System.—One hundred and ninety-six deaths
were due to diseases of the Respiratory Organs, as compared with
173 in the preceding year. The Death Rate under this heading
equals 1.87 per 1,000. Twenty-one were from Acute and 70 from
Chronic Bronchitis, 93 from the various forms of Pneumonia,
(43 being under five years of age), 2 from Emphysema, 4 from
Pleurisy, 1 from other diseases of the Larynx and Trachea, 1 from
Laryngitis, and 4 from other diseases.
