One hundred and sixty.two births belonging to the Borough
took place in Institutions outside the Borough area, thus the actual
figure for Greenwich becomes 2,113—Males, 1,098 ; Females, 1,015.
This figure gives a Birth Rate of 20.19 per 1,000 of the population,
which is 1.45 below the average for the last ten years.
The Birth Rate for the County of London equals 18.7 per 1,000
of the population. The Birth Rate for all England and Wales was
18.8.
Illegitimate births numbered 44, representing 2.0 per cent, of
the total births.
Eighty.five illegitimate births were registered in the Borough.
In 45 cases, however, the mothers were ordinarily resident outside
the Borough, and these births were consequently allocated to the
correct areas. Four illegitimate births belonging to Greenwich
occurred outside the Borough, thus giving the net figure of 44.
Twenty.nine illegitimate births occurred in the Greenwich
and Deptford Hospital.
Under the provisions of the Notification of Births Act, 1907,
intimations have been received from medical men, parents and
others, with respect to 2,245 births.
DEATHS.
The nett number of deaths registered during 1924 was 1,200,
of which 629 were males and 571 females. The crude Death Rate
for the Borough of 11.47 per 1,000 compares favourably with 12.1
the Death Rate for the County of London, and 12.3, the Death
Rate for the 105 Large Towns.
The Death Rate in the various Metropolitan Boroughs varied
from 10.4 in Lewisham, 10.8 in Woolwich, 11.0 in Wandsworth,
11.1 in Fulham, and 11.2 in Hackney, up to 14.10 in Finsbury,
14.0 in Southwark, 13.5 in Bermondsey and Shoreditch, and 13.1
in St. Marylebone.
Locally the Death Rate varied from 6.61 in Kidbrooke, 11.14.
in East Greenwich, 11.77 in St. Nicholas, Deptford, 11.84 in West
Greenwich up to 12.41 in Charlton.
Of the total number of deaths, 13 under five years of age were
of illegitimate birth, 11 of whom were under one year of age.
