In North Paddington the deaths were equal to the
averages, and the mortality (0.04) was also equal to
the mean. In South Paddington no death was
registered from this cause, the average being in each
case one, and the mean mortality 0.02.
The deaths of adult females from "diseases of
parturition" should be added to those from puerperal
fever, to obtain an idea as to the frequency of a fatal
issue in confinements. From the former diseases 6
deaths were registered, as compared with averages of 8,
8, and 7. The mortality was 0.04, or 0.02 below the
mean. During the ten years 1888-97,29,395births were
registered in the Parish, 24,637 in North Paddington,
and 4,758 in South. In the same period 188 deaths
were due to puerperal fever and diseases of parturition,
143 in North and 45 in South Paddington. The
corresponding fatality-rates (per 1,000 births registered)
for the ten years were 6.3, 5.8, and 9'4
respectively. In 1898 2,965 births were registered,
2,558 in North and 407 in South Paddington ; the
deaths from these causes were 10, 9, and 1, and the
fatality-rates 3.3, 3.5, and 2.4 respectively.

(80.0) is excessively high, but there is little doubt that it
is erroneous. It is very difficult to secure the full notification
of this disease, opinion being much divided as
to what is, and what is not, included in the term
