As in 1897, all the cases of this disease were from
North Paddington, no case having occurred in South
Paddington since 1894. In the nine years, 1890-98,
65 cases have occurred in the Northern, as against
4 in Southern District. In the former area 22,538
births were registered during that period, and in
the latter, 4,116, giving a case rate, per 1,000
births registered, of 2.66 and 0.96 respectively.
Fewer cases were reported from North Paddington
in 1891 (4) and 1894 (3), the total for each
of the remaining years being in excess of that of
last year. The maximum (15) was recorded in 1893.
In South Paddington 3 cases were recorded in 1893,
and one in 1894. In Paddington the reduction from
the average was equal to 44.5 per cent., as compared
with 12.6 in the Metropolis.
An examination of the information obtained in
connection with last year's cases shows that in 4 the
labour was more or less complicated, requiring the
attendance of more than one medical practitioner;
that there were different practitioners, midwives, and
nurses in each case; that 3 of the patients resided in
basement rooms; and that the condition of the houses
was described as "clean" or "very clean" in four out
the five, the state of the fifth house not being
