NOTIFICATION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The reported cases of infectious disease numbered
772, 231 fewer than in 1897 (1,003), and 454 fewer
than in 1896 (1,226). Last year's total was 228
below the average annual number for the eight years,
1890.97, after correction for the changes in the
population. The sickness.rate, based on the notifications,
was 6.04 per 1,000 persons of all ages, as
compared with a mean annual rate of 7.75 for
the preceding eight years. The rate for 1897 was
7.94, and that for 1896, 9.68. (See Table 6.)
In the Metropolis 37,382 cases were reported,
7,834 less than the annual average, 8,083 less than
the total for 1897, and 12,384 less than that for
1896. Last year's sickness.rate was 8.29, as compared
with a mean annual rate of 9.93 for 1890-97, and
rates of 10.18 and 11.10 in 1897 and 1896 respectively.
The reductions in last year's totals were
equivalent to 23.l and 17.8 per cent. of the figures
for 1897 for the Parish and the Metropolis respectively,
and to 37.1 and 24.9 per cent. of the figures for 1896.

In the Parish all the notifiable diseases, with the
exception of enteric fever, were under the respective
averages, while in the Metropolis diphtheria alone was
iu excess of the average. (See Table 6). There
