1887-96 was 24.5 per 1,000, 0.8 higher than the rate
for last year. (See Table 3.) With regard to the
sub-districts, the rate for St. John (12.66) shows the
greater diminution, being 1.92 below the mean rate
for the five years 1892-96 (13.58), and 1.3 below that
for the previous decennium (14.0). The birth-rate
for England and Wales was 29.7, 0.9 below the
decennial mean rate, and that for London 30.0, or 1.2
below the mean. (See Table 3.) Last year's rate for
Paddington was 5.9 below that for England and
Wales, and 6.2 below that for the Metropolis.
