Tuberculosis.
The deaths from Pulmonary Tuberculosis in 1924 numbered 77
(48 males and 29 females), as against 52 in 1923, and 57 in 1922. Other
Tuberculous diseases caused 11 deaths (10 males and 1 female), as against
5 in 1923, and 9 in 1922.
Of the total number of deaths from all forms of Tuberculosis, 24
died un-notified or notified at death; 5 notified within one month of
death; 6 notified within three months of death; and 3 notified within
6 months of death.
Of the Pulmonary Tuberculosis cases ending fatally, 40 per cent.
died in St. Luke's Hospital, and 26 per cent. in other public institutions,
that is to say 66 per cent. died away from their homes, the corresponding
figure for 1923 being 71, and for 1920, 66 per cent.
Fifty-nine specimens of sputum were sent by medical practitioners
to the Lister Institute for examination, this being the same number as
in 1923. Of the 59 specimens, 19 per cent. were positive for tubercle
bacillus and 81 per cent. were negative, as compared with 22 per cent.
positive and 78 per cent. negative for 1923.
The death-rate from all forms of Tuberculosis for Chelsea in 1924
was 1.3 per 1,000.
