The social condition of our people can be appreciated when the
fact is mentioned that 29 per cent. of the population die away from
home, in the Workhouse Infirmary and the various public hospitals.

The total number of births registered in the parish during 1898
was 4,165, of which 2,128 were males, and 2,037 females. This
is 83 less than in 1897, and is the lowest number since 1892. The
birth-rate is 33.8 per 1,000 inhabitants, against 34.7 for 1897,
The birth-rate for London for 1898 was 29.5 per 1,000.
