Thames Flooding.
On the night of the 6th and 7th January, 1928, serious flooding
occurred due to the overflowing of an abnormally high tide which
affected more or less seriously all the riparian Metropolitan Boroughs
and occasioned serious loss of life in some places. Fortunately,
no loss of life occurred in Battersea, but much hardship and distress
were occasioned in the lower parts of the Borough by the flooding
of the basements and ground floors of hundreds of houses.
On the instructions of the Mayor, who personally visited the
affected areas, immediate steps were taken by the Health Department
to render all possible assistance, and immediate relief was
given in urgent cases by the provision of coal for the drying of
houses, the pumping out and cleansing of cellars, and the drying
and disinfection of clothing, bedding etc. A full report upon the
flooding will be included in the next Annual Report.
No. of houses affected (approximately) 420
Premises supplied with disinfectants (approximately) 350
