(2) The Principal's House and the Caretaker's Lodge at
Southlands College.
(3) The premises now used as a Voluntary Welfare Centre and
Women's Dining Room at 111 Bridge Road West, the
activities carried on there to be transferred to the Southlands
College buildings.
On the sites so set free for building purposes it is proposed—
(1) To erect 18 tenements on the Latchmere site* and
tions were entered into with the Ministry of Health, who
were asked to consent, under Section 65 of the Housing
Act, 1925, to (a) the appropriation of the site in question
for the purpose of Part III. of the Act, and (b) to the grant
of a subsidy under the Housing (Financial Provisions)
Act, 1924.
In view of the fact that the Housing Subsidy is subject
to revision in October, 1927, it was urgently desirable to
secure the erection of the tenements by that date.
(2) The Principal's house and the Caretaker's lodge, separate
buildings in the grounds of the College, were considered
capable of conversion into working-class dwellings. In
the first-mentioned building it is proposed to provide five
tenements, the Caretaker's lodge providing an additional
tenement.
(3) The premises at 111 Bridge Road West at present used as a
Maternity and Child Welfare Centre, to provide 3 or 4
separate dwellings.
These new dwellings it is fexpected will be proceeded with early
in the new year, and will provide a useful addition to those already
erected by the Council, and relieve, in some degree, the serious
shortage of housing accommodation for the working classes in
the Borough.
New Houses.
Apart from the Plough Road Improvement Scheme, no new
houses were erected by the Council during 1926, but 10 houses or
flats were erected by private enterprise as follows:—
Totteridge Road 6 tenements.
Sudbrooke Road 1 house.
Blenkarne Road 2 houses.
Upper Tooting Park 1 house.
In addition to the above, plans for the development of an estate
at Nightingale Lane which will provide sites for the erection of
64 houses and for 2 houses in Sudbrooke Road were submitted, but
these dwelling-houses were not completed by the end of the year.
Repair of Unfit Houses.
During 1926, the repair of unfit houses under the Housing and
Public Health Acts, continued to be the main housing activity of
the Council and the work carried out in this direction under the
* These tenements are in course of erection and are expected to be ready
for occupation by the end of the summer.
