been preached in season and out of season. Some there are who listen
to the expert and so are saved; many there are however, who refuse
to take heed to the words of wisdom. Too often, alas, one has seen
Return ' cases where there ought not to have been any. "If only I
had listened to your advice" is a cry that has been uttered more than
once.

* Eight, previously Schicked, failed to turn up for the reading of the test.
Forty-two Inoculations were not given, as fifteen people missed these through
refusals to attend to complete, or through illness given as Mumps, Fretfulness, etc.

Enteric Fever.

Ten cases of Enteric Fever were notified as compared with 2 in
the previous year. There were two deaths.
Only three of these cases were enteric fever proper, the remaining
being Paratyphoid B. fever.
The following description of some of the cases gives an indication
of the work entailed in tracing the source:—
(1) O.B., female, three years, of Brockley Road, was notified on
June 6th. Some days previously she had had diarrhœa and abdominal
pains, accompanied by straining. A blood culture proved the presence of
the Bacillus Paratyphoid B and the case developed on true clinical lines.
Early in May, the patient had eaten watercress obtained from a shop
"E"; she had also eaten ice cream obtained from an unknown street
cycle-vendor. No other article of food associated by repute with
intestinal diseases had been eaten. Enquiry into the past and present
health history of the two families living in the house did not disclose
any suspicion of disease which would call for examination of certain
products.
Before discussing steps taken, it is necessary to deal with other cases.
(2) W.B., male, 36 years, of Arica Road, was notified on June 9th
as a case of Paratyphoid B. A clerk by occupation, his illness commenced
