Clinical Thermometer Makers.
Eight men are employed at this small workshop, for whom there is
one w.c., which is shared by the adjoining milk dealer.
The workshop is well lit, clean and well ventilated, Long glass
tubes arrive at the shop and here they are graduated after being cut to
the required length. The ends are then closed by means of a bunsen
burner, and the half-prepared thermometers despatched.
A Pharmaceutical Workshop.
This is a two-storey building comprising part of the old pre-existing
laundry. It is constructed of brick, with wood floors, and is excellently
lit and ventilated; the upper floor is lit by means of skylights.
Alterations have been carried out to adapt the place to its present use
and make it in every way a very satisfactory workshop. The rooms
are heated by gas radiators and the whole is kept scrupulously clean.
The large main room is on the second storey and is used mainly for
bottling and labelling various medical requisites such as corn paint,
pectoral balsam, and a host of others. The ground floor is used mainly
as a store for receiving and packing goods, and there is. a small
laboratory for the manager. The old engine house is used for cleaning
and drying bottles, the latter process being carried out in a specially
equipped heating chamber at about 90° F. The work at these premises
is entirely wholesale.
There are thirty girls employed, for whom there are four excellent
pedestal w.c.'s in well-ventilated separate enclosures. As a matter of
fact, the present sanitary accommodation is considerably in excess of
that required, but the manager is expecting to increase his staff, as the
work is developing steadily. We have asked the manager to provide
proper dustbins to take the place of the present boxes ; of course, most
of the refuse is packing material, shavings, etc., and this is burned in
the furnace. In addition, there are five men employed, for whom there
is one w.c.
Paint and Varnish Manufacturers.
This is a three-story building built of brick, originally used as a
printing works, but adapted to its present use. This firm manufactures
its own specialities. The top floor is used for storage purposes only;
here we found girls engaged in filling tins with enamel, labelling and
