Area and Population.
Acres. Estimated Population.
1563 113,500
The Census of 1921, originally planned for the 24th April, was
unavoidably postponed until the 19th June. Unfortunately, while the
latter date avoided the recognised period of industrial holidays, it is now
clear that, owing to the abnormally fine weather, some holiday movement
was already then in progress. This of course affected the Census
Returns, as far as local population figures are concerned, and it has
been therefore deemed necessary to make an adjustment by measuring
the extent of the non-resident population in the more popular holiday
areas and by effecting its redistribution throughout the country.
The population of Deptford to the middle of 1921 has been estimated
by the Registrar-General as 113,500.
The population for each of the various wards, based on this estimate, was as follows:—
East | 21,960 | South 12,587 |
North | 24,741 | South-East 12,770 |
North-West | 24,339 | South-West 17,103 |
As the Borough has an area of 1,563 acres, the density of the
population on this estimate is 73 persons per acre approximately.
Births.
Births. Birth rate.
2,667 23.5
The total number of births registered in the Borough was 2,549,
and of these 47 were transferred to other districts as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this Borough. 165 Births
occurring outside the Borough, in maternity hospitals, etc., were similarly
transferred to this district, making a total of 2,667 births in all
belonging to Deptford. Of these, 1,385 were males and 1,282 were
females.
The birth-rate was 23.5 per 1,000 of the estimated population, as
compared with 28.3 for the previous year.
The birth-rate for England and Wales for 1921 was 22.4 for the 96
Great Towns 23.3, for the 148 Smaller Towns, 22.7, and for the County
of London 22.3.
